Triveni in Sanskrit, the ancient Indian language, means confluence of
three sacred rivers. Triveni refers to a site in northern India where
the three great rivers of ancient India meet. Legends depict it as a
nexus with near-mystical healing and rejuvenation powers. Generations
of Indians have made a trip to Triveni to bathe in these sacred waters
for renewal of the mind, body and spirit.
The three rivers are the Ganga (Ganges), India's holiest river which,
according to legend, descends from the home of the gods above the Himalayas,
and down the mountain range to reach Triveni. The second is the blue
waters of Jamuna (Yamuna), associated with Lord Krishna, which flows
through major Indian cities including Delhi and Agra. The third river
is the legendary Saraswati, which is believed to flow underground and
intersects the other two rivers at Triveni. This river no longer exists
but archaeologists have found traces of in fossil fuels and India's epics
and sacred texts contain numerous references to this river.
